This artist’s interpretation of Magma and Crystals attempts to represent the extreme and volatile processes that take place kilometers below the Earth’s surface. By studying amphibole crystals, usually made from silicate or aluminosilicate minerals, Earth scientists can learn much about the underground behavior of volcanoes.
