Queen of the South Sea

The Queen of the South Sea is an animated short of millenary love inspired by the ancient Javanese legend of the Queen of the South Sea. She is also known as Nyai Loro Kidul, and her mythical presence is still very much alive today in the Indonesian City of Jogjakarta. The legend explores the relationship between the mythical queen and the rulers of the Mataram Sultanate near the Southern Java Sea.

This animated short is part of the Merapi Project a project that explores the science, the life and the culture about the Merapi Volcano in Java, Indonesia. The interdisciplinary project has an educational orientation, and it uses traditional storytelling to explain technical concepts and explore some of Merapi’s mythical legends.
